I am currently writing this email on Monday night, huddled under two blankets while TJ builds a fire. It has me wondering why we choose January for all these resets, when human nature is telling us to slow down and nest.
For so many winters I suffered from crushing seasonal affective disorder that made winter almost unbearable. While I still don’t fully enjoy these two months, I’ve made one big change that has helped me feel happier despite the cold and lack of sun.
What’s my secret? I leaned into the idea of Gentle January, first written about by Karlee Flores and introduced to me by Joy the Baker. Gentle January is all about embracing what makes you feel complete, satisfied and happy. Punishment-based resets are not allowed and the plan is completely customizable.
For me, Gentle January consists of 15 extra guilt-free minutes in the flannel sheets each morning; spending part of each day under an enormous blanket reading; binge-watching movies with the fam (we’re half way through all the Marvel movies already); meditating; and listening to my natural cravings. I’m reminded that I love vegetables even more than I love chocolate and a balance naturally returns to my life. I don’t shun pasta (the mac and cheese from Drink Progressively is on the menu for tonight), or deny myself a drink (it's always sparkling wine in January!). But a slower, more intentional day means I naturally drink a little less, and eat a little better.
I worry about Westernization of January - do more, be better and never rest all in the name of guilt, punishment and regret. I don’t want to pick up a new routine in January, or set rules that can’t be broken. I want to sink into this season, open a glass of wine (here’s a non-alcoholic option!), and sit by the fire with a dog at my feet. If this is you too, welcome to Gentle January.
