Root zone disease control

The root zone is vulnerable to disease. It is a warm, damp and nutrient rich environment, making it conducive to pathogen growth. Root diseases impact the plant’s ability to uptake and translocate water, nutrition and metabolites – which can be extremely damaging to plant health.

Most root zone diseases are ‘weak’ pathogens, meaning they require an entry point, and prefer anaerobic conditions that impact the ability of root cells to function properly. This means that root disease risks can often be managed by cultural methods.

Key cultural prevention methods for root disease:
• Creating an aerobic root zone by ensuring that it does not sit wet for extended periods
• Managing nutrient inputs to avoid EC toxicity and root burn
• Ensuring irrigation water and equipment is clean and disinfected
• Hygienically storing growing media
• Sterilising pots, trays, and growing areas

Growing success with overwintered dianthus

Last week, Fargro’s Technical Development Manager, Jack Haslam, visited Ferring Nursery to check on overwintered dianthus sown in September last year. These dianthus crops were only sprayed with biofungicides until the end of November and were fed with an integrated DCM organic feed. Overall, he saw great rooting, vibrant flowers, and zero signs of disease.
