Updates

704 datasets are now available, of which 53 were newly released this quarter.
Newly released datasets cover the forcibly displaced in the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Central African Republic, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, France, Germany, Haiti, Hungary, India, Iraq, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Moldova, Mozambique, Niger, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Somalia, Spain, Syrian Arab Republic, Tanzania, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

Featured datasets

Panama: Border Protection Monitoring, 2022-2023

Due to protection concerns, in July 2022, UNHCR started collecting monthly information on the characteristics, vulnerabilities, and protection needs of refugees and migrants entering Panama through the Darien jungle.

The Darien jungle is the only breaking point of the Pan-American Highway, linking the continent from south to north, and it is a transit location for thousands of refugees and migrants who are fleeing their countries due to fear of violence and insecurity. The Border Protection Monitoring dataset is now available on the UNHCR Microdata Library.

Ukraine: Survey of intentions and perspectives of IDPs, May 2023

In May 2023 UNHCR completed the second round of the survey of intentions and perspectives of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine. The first round was conducted in February 2023, and this second round was conducted in parallel with the refugees’ intentions survey in the Europe region and a joint report was published. The data include variables related to IDP profiles, their current situation and intentions and factors influencing their decision-making.

UNHCR survey in Bangladesh and Pakistan on sustainable core-relief items

The UNHCR offices in Bangladesh and Pakistan conduct annual post-distribution monitoring (PDM) to seek feedback on non-food and shelter items distributed to refugees. This year, they modified the questionnaires to capture feedback on the shift towards new and sustainable core-relief items. 1778 households were surveyed in Bangladesh and 748 household were surveyed in Pakistan, and the data is now available on the Microdata Library.

Socio Behavioral Insight for Community Centered Cholera Preparedness and Response in Mozambique

Cholera has been endemic in Mozambique since the early 1970 and has become increasingly seasonal since 2017. In the wake of the current outbreak that started in September 2022, Niederberget et al. explore the socio-behavioral determinants including local knowledge, perceptions, practices and structural factors influencing cholera transmission dynamics. They draw on existing information from secondary sources including the 2019 Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) Survey conducted by UNHCR which is available on the Microdata Library.

Exploring innovative ways of securely sharing microdata

In the past month, the UNHCR Data Innovation Fund steering committee has announced the endorsement of the "New Privacy Technology for Better Data Sharing" project led by the Data Curation Team for its 2023-2024 funding cycle. This project aims to test new privacy enhancing technologies to share datasets that cannot currently be made available on the UNHCR Microdata Library (MDL) due to their sensitive nature. The goal is to enable broader researcher access to representative datasets while still protecting refugee privacy. If successful, this could allow researchers access to datasets that accurately convey MDL content without breaching confidentiality. This is an exciting opportunity that could help drive an improved evidence base and new initiatives to protect, empower, and include refugees. Overall, this project could shape future data sharing practices for UNHCR.
