Updates

784 datasets are now available, of which 50 were newly released this quarter.

Jordan: Vulnerability Assessment Framework Survey

The Vulnerability Assessment Framework (VAF) is a key tool used by humanitarian and development organizations in Jordan. It contributes to consistent vulnerability identification and programme delivery across sectors. The VAF consolidates all sector-specific assessments into one, with the intent of avoiding duplicate data collection exercises and minimizing the burden on refugee households.

Refugee households residing in host communities were randomly sampled across all governorates to explore thematic and sectoral vulnerabilities for refugee populations of all nationalities within Jordan. In this iteration, a new set of questions were included to capture how climate change affects refugees’ lives.

Europe: Multi-Sector Needs Assessment (MSNA)

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to the displacement of around one-fourth of its population, with 5.7 million people seeking refuge within Ukraine and across 34 European nations. In response, the Regional Refugee Coordination Forum implemented the Multi-Sector Needs Assessment (MSNA) survey in 2023, essential for the Inter-Agency Regional Response Plan. Conducted in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Czechia, Moldova, Romania, and Bulgaria, the MSNA methodically identifies vital needs in sectors like protection, health, education, shelter, livelihoods, and food security. Using a harmonized questionnaire, it provides comparable and actionable data, enabling humanitarian actors to strategically plan and implement effective interventions, and ensuring that resources are efficiently allocated to the most pressing needs of the displaced Ukrainian population.

Burundi: Socio-Economic Survey 2019-20

The Burundi 2019-20 Socioeconomic Survey, a collaborative effort between UNHCR and the World Bank, offers an essential perspective on the living conditions of refugees in Burundi. Conducted alongside the UNHCR's Verification Exercise, this survey employed a systematic random sampling method, drawing from a combined UNHCR-Government of Burundi registration database. Covering key areas such as education, employment, and access to services, it reveals the socio-economic dynamics of refugees residing in urban areas and camps. The survey, running from November 2019 to May 2020, provided invaluable data for the development of targeted assistance programs and policy planning, significantly enhancing the understanding of the challenges and needs of refugees in Burundi.

Asia-Pacific: Results Monitoring Surveys 2023

UNHCR uses Results Monitoring Surveys (RMS) to collect information on how displaced and stateless people fare according to UNHCR’s core indicators on well-being, access to services and legal rights.

Four RMS for the Asia-Pacific region were undertaken in Myanmar, Malaysia, Nepal, and Tajikistan. The datasets include observations from 8,405 households combined, covering 24,994 individuals. These 4 surveys are representative of 2.8 million displaced or stateless people in these countries. While the overall indicators covered by this survey are the same, surveys have been adapted to match each specific country context, e.g. a module on internal displacement was included in the Myanmar version of the survey, while Nepal added a socio-economic assessment module. Myanmar conducted data collection in April-May of 2023. The remaining data collections took place in the final quarter of 2023.

Research using data from the Library

Internally Displaced Persons: Main Challenges and Prospects for the Provision of Their Competitiveness Growth

The study by Larysa Lisogor from the National Institute for Strategic Studies, Kyiv, addresses the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022. Utilizing data from the Survey of Intentions and Perspective of refugees from Ukraine #4 – June 2023 in UNHCR’s Microdata Library, Lisogor shows that while a significant number of IDPs aspire to return home, their immediate focus is on security and adaptation to current living conditions. The study highlights a prominent "female portrait" among IDPs, emphasizing the need for economic empowerment of women. It also reveals that despite high educational qualifications among IDPs, employment barriers persist, pointing to the need for enhanced training and employer engagement for better job integration.

Other news from the Curators

In February, Lauren Herby attended the Fragility Forum at World Bank Headquarters. She spoke in a panel together with Olivier Dupriez (World Bank) and Patrick Brock (Joint Data Center) about the successful collaboration between the World Bank and UNHCR in the development of UNHCR’s Microdata Library and its interoperability with that of the World Bank. This partnership demonstrates that it is possible to link humanitarian and development data to improve knowledge in fragile contexts. Lauren will continue to work closely with Olivier and colleagues at the World Bank in leading a new project funded by the JDC to build an indicator platform that integrates socioeconomic indicators with the population statistics currently published on UNHCR’s Refugee Data Finder.
