Europe: Regional Socio-Economic Insights Survey (SEIS) 2024

The Regional Socio-Economic Insights Survey (SEIS) 2024 dataset consolidates data from Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia. It provides a regional overview of demographics, health, protection, food security, education, livelihoods, and housing for refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.

This data is key to shaping the 2025 Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP), supporting evidence-based decisions, resource allocation, and targeted interventions. By integrating insights from ten countries, the Regional SEIS 2024 fosters collaboration and informs sustainable solutions for displaced populations across Europe.

South Sudan: Community-Based Assessment - 2024

The Community-Based Assessment Survey 2024 dataset for South Sudan evaluates the capacity of return areas to absorb displaced populations, including refugee returnees, returned IDPs, and host communities.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the assessment covers household demographics, health, education, livelihoods, protection, and infrastructure evaluations. The data informs operational planning, self-reliance programs, and service provision strategies, ensuring evidence-based decision-making for humanitarian efforts. By capturing insights from diverse communities, the Community-Based Assessment Survey 2024 supports strategic interventions aimed at improving access to services and fostering sustainable reintegration solutions.

DRC, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Myanmar, Pakistan: Protracted Displacement Economies - 2021-2023

The dataset examines the economic and social dynamics of protracted displacement across five countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Myanmar, and Pakistan. A large-scale household survey, conducted in 15 locations across these countries, gathered data on both displaced populations and host communities to enable intra- and cross-country comparisons. Covering topics such as livelihoods, social support, mobility history, and wellbeing, the dataset provides critical insights into the realities of displacement-affected communities. The baseline survey in 2021 included 14,504 households, with a follow-up survey in 2023 reaching 1,779 households in four countries.

Research using data from the Library

Effect of households’ members disability and serious illness on public health insurance subscription among urban refugees during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya - 2024

The journal article "Effect of Households’ Members Disability and Serious Illness on Public Health Insurance Subscription among Urban Refugees during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Kenya" by Abayomi Samuel Oyekale and Thonaeng Charity Molelekoa, published in BMC Public Health, examines how disability and serious illness impact health insurance uptake among urban refugees.

Using data from the Kenya - Socioeconomic Survey of Urban Refugees, 2021, collected by the UNHCR and World Bank, the study applies a Treatment Effects Probit model to assess enrollment in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Findings show that refugees with disabled or seriously ill household members were significantly more likely to subscribe, with factors like CBO membership, asset ownership, and financial savings influencing participation.

The study underscores the need for targeted policy interventions to enhance insurance accessibility for vulnerable refugee populations in Kenya.

UNHCR is advancing data accessibility while strengthening privacy protections by integrating differential privacy (DP) into its Microdata Library. Traditional statistical disclosure control (SDC) methods can limit the utility of shared datasets, particularly for full enumeration datasets like UNHCR registration data, preventing their public release.
In 2024, UNHCR collaborated with a UC Berkeley researcher to implement DP using OpenDP, an open-source framework from Harvard’s Privacy Tools Project. DP introduces controlled noise, enabling full-size synthetic datasets that preserve statistical properties while ensuring confidentiality. Despite challenges in handling complex relational structures in UNHCR’s registration data, this approach outperforms SDC methods in accuracy and privacy when working with census-like datasets.

Later this year, differentially private synthetic registration datasets will be available for the first time on a dedicated section of the Microdata Library, offering researchers, NGOs, and policymakers deeper insights into refugee demographics, protection needs, and assistance received, supporting more effective humanitarian responses.
