We are pleased to share with you our quarterly updates for the period of April to June 2023.

Updates

652 datasets are now available, of which 41 were newly released this quarter.
Newly released datasets cover the forcibly displaced in the following countries: Bangladesh, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Czechia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Iraq, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Moldova, Nepal, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka and Türkiye.

Europe: Survey of Intentions and Perspectives of Refugees from Ukraine 2023

The fourth round of the Survey of Intentions and Perspectives of Refugees from Ukraine has concluded, and the report was released this week together with the microdata. This survey series interviews refugees from Ukraine in the Europe region, collecting primary data on their profiles, their current situation and intentions to return, and the factors influencing their decision-making. The microdata from the second and third rounds are also available on the Library, and this round includes households that were previously interviewed as well as new households.

Vulnerability Assessment of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon 2022

The 2022 Vulnerability Assessment of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon (VASyR) microdata has been released. It is the tenth survey conducted in this series that started in 2016. The main objective of the VASyR 2022 is to provide insights about Syrian refugees impacted by the political and economic crisis that hit Lebanon. The VaSyR microdata from previous years are also available on the Microdata Library.

Malaysia: Financial Behaviour Survey 2022

The UNHCR operation in Malaysia collected data on financial literacy and behaviours among refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia between Jan and Feb 2023. The objective of the exercise was to understand their interest in financial and digital services. The microdata includes variables on regulatory barriers to financial inclusion and access to technology used for financial transactions. Respondents shared their coping strategies and work arounds to these regulatory barriers.

Access to Durable Solutions Among IDPs in Iraq, 2016-2021

Access to Durable Solutions Among IDPs in Iraq is a unique study conducted by IOM and Georgetown University that followed households who were internally displaced between 2014 and 2015. This panel study includes six rounds of data collection over a five year period that aimed to shed light on how evolving conditions of prolonged displacement change the lives of IDPs over time, and how IDPs themselves adapt and engineer solutions to displacement-related challenges. The IASC framework for durable solutions was used to design the study. The microdata is now available on the Library.

Research using data from the Library

The role of humanitarian assistance and social protection in basic needs and well being

Hagen-Zanker, et al. from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) explore the relationship between the provision of assistance and basic needs and wellbeing outcomes in displacement settings, and how these effects may differ when the assistance is more closely linked to state social protection programmes.

They find that assistance recipients generally show better outcomes than non-recipients in various dimensions, and that positive wellbeing outcomes are stronger for those who receive humanitarian assistance.

This researchers reviewed UNHCR data to inform their research design, including studies conducted in Uganda and Lebanon whose microdata is available on the Library.
