BCP had an eventful summer which flew by! We started the summer winning the Excellence in Innovation award from the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. We also received a Cummings Grant and were featured on WBZ and Boston 25 for our unique model. We had a blast running and raising money for BCP at the Falmouth Road Race and soon after hosted our annual Back to School event at The BASE which was a huge success! There are so many great things happening at BCP in the next few months including our From the Front Lines event on November 13th at the JFK library which we know you won’t want to miss. Next month, BCP will be celebrating our 4th Anniversary - time flies when you are changing the way health care is delivered to all children!

Jasmine is an incredible Mom of 8 BCP patients who always makes sure her kids have what they need. We wanted to give an update from our last newsletter. She recently finished nursing school and we are so proud of her hard work and the amazing role model she is for our community and her children. Jasmine sent us this note over the summer:

“ Thanks BCP for allowing my kids to have these experiences each summer! They will remember overnight camp for life and I honestly couldn’t have sent them all without the help of such an amazing clinic. Imagine a world where caring doctors and a supportive team are actually by your side, ready to help with anything. That’s the magic of BCP. You’ve all been an anchor for me and my children, helping us navigate challenges and bringing immense peace of mind. As a mother, BCPs presence is more valuable than words can express, especially Dr. Woo-Pierce. We love our pediatrician! ”

Sheilin is a 17 year old senior at Boston Latin Academy. She is the older sister of two younger siblings, and is such a role model to them and many others. Sheilin is an excellent student, and is hoping to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
This summer Sheilin was a participant in Digital Ready where she took college courses related to the STEM field and was recognized for her dedication and engagement throughout the program. Sheilin has also been an employee of Future Chefs in Roxbury, where she was chosen to be the youth speaker at their Small Plates Event. Sheilin is currently launching her own mental health support club this fall for other students. We could not be more proud of Sheilin, and can't wait to see the incredible things that she will do!

We Won the Massachusetts Nonprofit Excellence Award
BCP is the proud recipient of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN) 2024 Excellence in Innovation award! Each year, these prestigious awards are presented to six non profit organizations that exemplify the most innovative, creative, and effective work being done throughout the Commonwealth. Although BCP did not find out that we won until the evening of the award ceremony (the Oscars of nonprofit awards), BCP chose to bring our entire team with us for this momentous occasion and we are so glad we did! This incredible recognition is a testament to BCP’s transformative work to change the landscape of pediatric healthcare and to center dignity, trust, and equity in all we do.

We Celebrated Mental Health
BCP's pre-teen Power Support group had another great session where patients have the opportunity to share experiences in a safe, judgment-free space. Topics center around self-esteem, body image, coping with stress, healthy friendships, social media, values, identity, and more. Through these conversations and programming patients learn to address mental health concerns at an early age and work towards ending the stigma around mental health. We are so proud of both our individual, group and community work that models the importance of prioritizing both physical AND mental health!

BCP's Girls on the Run team celebrated the conclusion of their seventh season! Throughout this eight-week program, the team focused on both their mental and physical health, all while training to run a 5K together, which the entire team finished! We love watching patients work towards common goals, all while building community and confidence.

BCP completed the second cohort of BCP’s Strong Mom, Healthy Baby group. Throughout this year-long program, new moms attend monthly group sessions where they meet with care navigators and mental health clinicians to participate in parent-led, provider-facilitated workshops, all while receiving their babies' well-child exams and vaccinations. These workshops center around topics including early literacy, mental health awareness, reflective parenting techniques, and family empowerment. We are so proud of these incredible moms for their dedication and commitment during these sessions.

At BCP, we celebrate Pride all year long. Each and every day we celebrate inclusiveness by creating spaces that encourage people to be their true and authentic selves and embrace who they are. To celebrate Pride this year, BCP created a video where staff and interns shared what Pride means to them. At BCP our goal is to ensure that everyone is seen, heard, and cared for regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

We Hosted Summer Programs
This summer, we hosted a fun line-up of summer programs to ensure that kids who were not in camp or other summer activities had the opportunity to be active and engaged. We partnered with South End Soccer, Urbanity Dance, Coach Jess from Ethos gym, Knucklebones, and Romel from Canadian Parks, who hosted a boys-only weight lifting class. BCP also held our own fan-favorite Fun Fridays where we engaged in a number of different arts and crafts projects together. And of course, we continued BCP Nutritious, BCP’s weekly cooking class! Thank you to all of BCP's incredible partners - both new and old - who brought an amazing and fun-filled summer to BCP!

We Hosted Our Annual Back to School Event
We had an amazing turn out of 225 families (450 people) for our annual Back to School event to help kids get ready for school. This event, held at The BASE, featured New England Revolution professional soccer players who talked with patients while kicking soccer balls together. There was also sports equipment donated from Franklin Sports, Sal's Pizza, Ben and Jerry's ice cream, a photobooth, a DJ, and an arts and crafts station. With support from a number of corporate partners - Audax Private Equity, Plymouth Rock Assurance Foundation, and Bain Capital - we gave away over 500 amazing backpacks filled with school supplies and hygiene kits from Hope and Comfort! Families also received fresh produce and shelf-stable food provided by the YMCA and the Greater Boston Food Bank. We are so grateful to City Councilor John Fitzgerald and Sarah Sharpe from the Mayor’s Office who jumped right in to help us give away these awesome backpacks and food to families.

We Raised Money on the Run at the Falmouth Road Race
In August, BCP had an incredible team of 30 staff, donors, consultants, and friends who ran the seven-mile Falmouth Road Race and raised over $78,000 to support programs and innovation at BCP! This is one of BCP’s favorite days as we get to join so many fabulous organizations running in Falmouth, while raising critical funds to support our mission of bringing equity to pediatric healthcare.
