The Shop on Main is closing

But we will continue to bring you handcrafted, fairtrade gifts through community pop ups, special events and our online shop

Friends, we are sad to announce, especially on this week of World Fair Trade Day, that we have made the decision to close our shop at 1718 W Main Street. Our last day open at this location is Sunday, May 26, 2024. We will be open 11am-5pm on that day.

The move to a new location has been challenging but we were hopeful. West Downtown Boise is a great established neighborhood that is experiencing some exciting growth! And it’s not far from our old place in Hyde Park (and now we are in walking distance from our friends at Artisans for Hope). Plus, we just love all of the light and airiness of our new space!

But, in many ways, the move has been like opening a new business. We’ve tried everything we can think of to bring more people through our doors but we just aren’t making ends meet. This means we have to close the brick and mortar.

So what's next for Dunia?

Well, we aren’t giving up! Our commitment to our mission and to fair trade is as strong as ever. So, we will pivot, and focus on community pop-ups, special events and our online shop. Who knows? Maybe we will find a partner and set-up a kiosk in an existing space or have regular monthly pop-ups. In some ways we are going back to our fair trade roots, bringing cultural handicrafts to where people already gather.

How can you help?

Shop with us! We still have bills to pay and there will be new expenses as we pivot. Plus, we need to thin out our inventory so that we can be nimble for pop-ups and events. (and we really don't want to pay for storage!) Right now all regularly priced items are 20% off (excluding food). This is a great time to get a graduation or Mother's Day gift. Or maybe that one item you've always had your eye on.

World Fair Trade Day!

Did You Know - When you shop Fair Trade both the artisan and the community get paid. The community stipend is called a Fair Trade premium. This money can be invested in whatever the community agrees it needs like healthcare, or education, clean water or housing. This is one of the many things that makes Fair Trade unique.

Teacher appreciation dish and recycle papere apple box

This lovely trinket dish from the West Bank makes a thoughtful gift for the educator in your life. It features the inspiring quote "A teacher engages the mind and loves the heart," hand-painted on it, serving as a beautiful reminder of the significance of education and compassion in our lives.

The apple box is made using a traditional crafting technique where strips of recycled magazine are wrapped round and round.

This joyful bronze sculpture was crafted in Burkina Faso using the traditional lost wax technique. Lost wax is considered one of the oldest metal casting methods. The artist shapes the wax, covers it with clay or mud, and lets it harden. Once the bronze is melted and poured into the mold, it replaces the wax, creating a unique piece. The final step involves breaking the clay to unveil the work.
