Scams get smarter, banks see record losses

The Banking Ombudsman has flagged the issue of financial scams as a growing concern. Cases involving phishing, online purchases, and investment scams have led to record-breaking losses.

Banking Ombudsman Nicola Sladden remarked on the increasing sophistication of scams and their number. Scams make up more than a quarter of all cases over the past year and are up 80% from the year prior.

California targets Exxon Mobil over accusations of recycling lies

California has filed a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil, accusing the company of lying about plastic recycling for decades. The state’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, claims Exxon has been selling more than oil—they’ve been selling the myth of recycling.

Bonta accuses the company of “recycling its lies” through deceptive marketing like the “chasing arrows” symbol. As Bonta put it, “It doesn’t matter what bin you put it in… it’s going to end up in the environment, the incinerator, or the landfill.”
