Bird of the Week: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Listen Hear Their Song

The vibrant Ruby-throated Hummingbird is small, but mighty! This bird’s wings beat about 53 times per second in a figure-8 motion. These hummingbirds zip from one nectar source to the next, enjoying bright flowers like bee balm and honeysuckle, as well as backyard bird feeders filled with sugar water (one-quarter cup of sugar per cup of water).

If you live in a hot climate and have a hummingbird feeder, beware: the liquid inside can get so hot it burns hummingbirds’ tongues when they reach inside for a taste, which could cause them to be unable to eat. Take your feeder down during peak sun hours. Hot weather can also cause the sugar water to ferment, turning into toxic alcohol—be sure to change the sugar water regularly.

Fun fact: Ruby-throated hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel.
