Bird of the Week: The Toco Toucan

Listen Hear Their Song

The Toco Toucan seems like it’s more beak than bird! Its neon orange and yellow beak — resembling a glorious tropical sunset — can be 7.5 inches long, while the toucan’s entire body measures about 25 inches. And though the beak looks like it could be pretty heavy, these birds weigh less than 1.5 pounds.

What’s interesting about toucans’ large beaks is that they actually eat mostly small bits of fruit and nuts (and sometimes insects and lizards), and don’t need those big ‘ol honkers to break into or bite their food. So their giant beaks may be a way to allure mates, or even release body heat.

Fun fact: Toucans’ bills are made of keratin, the same substance that makes up our hair and nails.

A wise old owl lived in an oak

The more he saw the less he spoke

The less he spoke the more he heard.

Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?
