Bird of the Week: The Cliff Swallow

Listen Hear Their Song

Cliff Swallows are the architects of the natural world. Their white foreheads give them away, and they can be spotted along bridges, overpasses, and the sides of cliffs during spring, busily building their nests out of mud.

Cliff Swallows feed off insects in the air and are quite the spectacle for bird watchers, as they actively flit in and out of their nests to feed and gather materials. They like to congregate as a large colony (sometimes with thousands of nests) above the ground as they collect from mud puddles and build their youngs’ protective, jug-shaped homes glob by glob, fashioning their very own stucco.

Fun fact: After leaving the nest young Cliff Swallows gather in groups called creches; their parents can find them again by their unique voices.

'Tis the blithest, bonniest weather for a bird to flirt a feather,

For a bird to trill and warble, all his wee red breast a-swell

I've a secret. You may listen till your blue eyes dance and glisten,

Little maiden, but I'll never, never, never, never, tell.
