In 1990, Duke made it to the national championship game.
Waiting for them was UNLV — a powerhouse loaded with future NBA talent.
The game wasn’t even close.
UNLV crushed them 103–73, a 30-point blowout that left no doubt who the better team was that night.
Most teams would’ve spent the offseason trying to forget a loss like that.
Duke did the opposite.
They studied it.
They trained harder.
They came back more disciplined, more connected, and more prepared.
One year later, the two teams met again in the Final Four.
UNLV was undefeated.
Thirty-four wins. Zero losses.
They were 9-point favorites and widely considered unbeatable.
But Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s team believed something different.
For forty minutes, they matched them possession for possession — defending, rebounding, executing.
When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read 79–77.
Duke had done what no one thought possible.
Two nights later, they won the first national championship in school history.
