A couple of years ago, NFC/Edge Rods launched a project that utilized a linen fiber and made it into fly rods and blanks. The project was a success (we launched it on Kickstarter, as we use that platform from time to time as a way to memorialize the project (it makes it convenient to say that we did it first, and prove it with a date stamp)

The project garnered international attention of a major brand that resulted in arguably one of the most expensive fly rods made.

What makes linen special?

A video is worth 1,000 words, and our team covers the benefits of this material in some detail. Some of the highlights are:

• Linen/Flax is a natural hollow fiber
• The resulting action is very similar to fiberglass, but with a very quick dampening/recovery akin to carbon fiber
• It has a beautiful woody look and texture but due to the hollow nature of the blank is incredibly lightweight
• Flax is incredibly durable, the best description is a hybrid between glass and carbon fiber - it is not afraid of high sticking
• Flax fiber does have some memory - if you overstress the sections, it will remain slightly bent and can be straightened back, or left alone for a period to recover (similar to bamboo)
