Rowland "Power 10" Edition

Vol. 1 Ed. 4

Hello Connor!

The Rowland Family has given the Friends of GWU Men’s Rowing Community a challenge. They have generously offered to match the next $10,000 of gifts by GW Men’s Rowing Alumni.

The Rowlands are behind GW Men’s Rowing in every sense. Kathy and Art Rowland, parents of Aidan Rowland, Vice President of the club team offer the following:

Challenge Statement:

β€œAs members of the larger GW Men’s Rowing community and in appreciation of the tireless work, success, and leadership the entire team has demonstrated in and out of the boats, we are making this contribution. Just like racing where every second matters, every contribution in all amounts matters in support of the team. Please assist GWMR in their continued success and high-level achievements. They are doing their part and certainly have earned it. Please join us in the Power10 campaign with your own contribution."

- Kathy & Art Rowland

This is the first time a parent has offered a challenge to the alumni!  Hopefully, this will help us crush the June 30th, $100,000 goal.  Please get behind this, we need all the alumni to work together.

About the Rowland Family

Kathy and Art Rowland are long-time residents of Scottsdale, AZ where they raised Aidan and his twin sister, Emma. Until Aidan started rowing in high school the family had no prior exposure to the sport, but quickly appreciated the community, team building, and competitive chemistry it promotes. Coincidentally, Emma is also in D.C. where she attends American University.

The Rowland’s Favorite Moment To Date

β€œWho doesn’t have their favorite memory while being part of GW Rowing?

Hands down our favorite memory was watching every boat race at IRA’s.  From the time trials to the Petite Finals in the 40 degree rain, it  set up for a very dramatic day of racing. It did not disappoint!  The 2V (Aidan’s boat)  started down the race, but ended up walking every crew to place first in the Petite Final and 7th overall.  They beat Brown, Stanford, Navy, Cornell and Wisconsin. This was just one example of the potential with this team.

With a strong confident start, the boat set about its business with a race plan in mind. They executed their plan flawlessly without any coxswain audio communication (shorted out by the rain and water in the boat), trusting each other the entire way – and crossed the finish line first. It was truly an  β€œAll of Us or None of Us” moment. Unforgettable.”

Thank you to all the Rowlands! From Aidan being a leader on the team to Art and Kathy motivating us all to support the team!

Create A New Match to help us start 2022

Are you ready to offer your own challenge? You can create a match challenge for your class, your decade, all alumni or the parents?

All powerful crews are fueled by alumni and parents, not the university. Harvard’s annual budget for rowing is $0. The alumni have endowed the program and continue to support their team annually. Our Potomac neighbors are rumored to raise $300,000 annually for their team.

Think about that. We are the difference.  If you are interested please reach out to Chris Hawthorne at friendsofgwmr@gmail.com to discuss creating a match challenge to support the team..
