Autumn is swiftly approaching, and mid to late summer is the right time to plot and plant for a fall bumper crop. There’s no need to be discouraged if you lack garden space, container gardening is a viable alternative. Our motto is “if you can grow it in the ground, you can grow it in a container”.

When selecting vegetables for fall feasting, be sure to read the seed packet in its entirety. Choose veggie varieties listing the shortest “days to maturity” or “days to harvest”. Also, seek out selections specifically recommended for container growing as these will be vegetables that are smaller in size, making them appropriate for growing in pots and planters. Some vegetables, such as kale, lettuce, and spinach may be harvested and eaten early, before they are fully mature, making them more tender, nutrient-dense, and delicious.

Growing in containers has its benefits, from less bending and kneeling to reduced weed and pest pressure. Make sure that your designated planters are frost-proof and have drainage holes. Situate them in a full sun location.

In some areas of the country, frost comes sooner than in others. It is a good idea to become familiar with your USDA Hardiness Zone, providing your area's estimated first and last frost dates. This information will help you decide when to plant your fall crops.

Our list of the Top 10 Favorite Fall Veggies includes popular vegetables that can withstand a frost just in case the temperature in your area drops quickly. Did you know that many frost-tolerant vegetables taste sweeter after being frost kissed? It’s true! Fall root vegetables, especially carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips will convert starches into sugar, leaving them delightfully sweeter.
