Want to Sneak Peek into the Wonders of the Venetian Lagoon?
|
|
Vital’s new publication, The Mudflat Crew, is a 20-page comic book for children and grownups alike, designed to raise awareness of the delicate natural ecosystems surrounding Venice. It’s illustrated by Rullampo, a visual artist and illustrator based in Milan, who took various field trips to the salt marshes to create a story featuring cartoonish characters inspired by the local fauna.
In the publication, a group of friends is navigating the wetlands on the hunt for a mysterious treasure. The protagonists – Alvise, Clio, Toni, and Lucia – are local water birds: a black-winged stilt, a common redshank, a shoveler, and a great curlew. Following their journey strip after strip, we meet other characters in the shape of various wildlife species – like the grass snake, Bepi – and mythological beasts – like the Pàtera. Spoiler Alert: In the end, the crew finds out the treasure they were looking for has been right under their feet all along. It’s the Venetian lagoon.
The Mudflat Crew was created in collaboration with We Are Here Venice – our partner in Vital – to spark curiosity and encourage even the youngest readers to get to know the lagoon by exploring its wetlands and observing its wildlife.
The book is now available at our store. Don’t miss its launch at Spazio, on June 21.

An Exciting Feature in Gagosian Quarterly
|
|
This month, Gagosian’s Quarterly dedicated a six-page feature to Laguna~B in its Summer Issue, including an exclusive interview with our artistic director Marcantonio and stunning photography by Karla Hiraldo-Voleau. In the piece, Marcantonio breaks down his vision for the company, his relation with Venice, and how he reckons with a centuries-old tradition: “The key to our design process is to keep tradition out of the picture and let creativity flow. […] We believe the only way to “save” Murano is by investing in innovation and making free creativity the drive for the future.”
While you wait for the printed issue – which is absolutely worth having – you can read the online version here.

Book tip by Ghi di Montauto
|
|
This month’s reading was suggested by Ghi di Montauto, a friend and architect who co-designed Spazio’s signature fountain installation.
“In 1973, a group of architects, designers, and artists gathered in Milan at the editorial office of the magazine Casabella, putting together a series of workshops that would last until 1975. The group – including Ettore Sottsass Jr., Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Riccardo Dalisi, Remo Buti, Ugo La Pietra, Franco Raggi, Davide Mosconi, and members of the groups Archizoom, 9999, Superstudio, UFO and Zziggurat – constituted Global Tools, one of the most important radical experiences in Italy as well as in the history of design and architecture. Conceived as a ‘school of arts and crafts and an anti-disciplinary attempt to establish a platform for the free exchange of different ideas and experiences: a place suited for the stimulation of individual creativity and the development of human potentialities.’”
Global Tools 1973–1975 - When Education Coincides with Life was published by Nero Editions in 2018. It documents the story of the eponymous experience of Radical Design and its multidisciplinary school program “without students or teachers.” It collects remarkable essays, hundreds of photos, and original documents that are still relevant today.
The B~Library is an exciting Laguna~B side project. It is a book collection curated (and continuously updated) by @studio.bruno located at Spazio, in Dorsoduro 3276, Venice. Anyone can borrow any book every day from 10 AM to 7 PM. Come and visit!

To All Sweethearts:
Maccapani x Laguna~B Souvenir Tee Has Arrived.
|
|
After Andrea Ceresa’s 2023 glittering design inspired by vintage postcards, here’s yet another original, humorous take on the clichè souvenir tees sold in Venice tourist shops.
Laguna~B’s new shirt – this time long-sleeved and oversized– is a collaboration with Maccapani, the “post-streetwear,” female-centered brand launched by Margherita Maccapani Missoni last year. Serena Scozzafava, the designer, said she conceived of it as a fictional, romantic y2k postcard: a chunky heart shape frames the San Marco cathedral in a bright-red sunset; a couple of silver dolphins – looking like hard plastic toys – make up the scene.
The tee will launch soon. Keep an eye out for it on the Maccapani’s website.

Our Connection to the Lagoon

In July 2023, we described some interventions carried out on the perimeter of a recently constructed infill in the central lagoon of Venice, expressly designed to improve communication between the surrounding waters and the infill area by promoting the formation of tidal channels.
Tidal channel dynamics have been extensively studied in natural salt marshes but more work is needed in reconstructed wetland systems to promote understanding of their fundamental importance to the viability of the infill by facilitating nutrient and oxygen exchanges associated with the general tidal circulation patterns of the lagoon and, consequently, conditions offered to living organisms.
