Community Updates and Events

Though we celebrate Black History in February, Black History is American History and should be celebrated and remembered always. Here is our monthly roundup of events hosted by DAIP or other organizations, that highlight Rhode Island’s relationship to Black History and this year’s theme of Black Resistance.

  • (February 28th, noon - 1:00 p.m.) Reshaping Power Structures through Black Resistance. Join DAIP for a virtual panel discussion moderated by DAIP founder Linda Newton and highlighting Black leaders and changemakers who are shifting power dynamics within their respective circles in Rhode Island. Panelists include Stephanie Akunvabey (Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Roger Williams University), Leslie Moore (community developer and owner of Core Collective), and Juan Wilson Jr. (Founder & CEO, The MUSE Foundation). Attendees will leave with tactics and strategies to take action within their spheres of influence. Register here.

  • (February 22nd, 5:30 - 7 p.m.) Still, I Rise: African Heritage Medical Pioneers in R.I. The 1696 Heritage Group will host a special exhibit and lecture focused on Black medical History co-sponsored by the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, Neighborhood Health Plan and Providence Community Health Centers. Registration and event questions can be directed to Diversity and Inclusion Committee Member Lucy Rivas at lrivas@providencechc.org.

  • (Thursday, February 24th, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.) State of Black Businesses in Rhode Island. Join RIBBA for this event at Sprout Coworking (166 Valley Street, Providence, RI 02909). In both owning businesses and receiving state contracts, data unequivocally shows that Black Rhode Islanders continue to experience discrimination. How does this impact our state economy and what action can our state leaders take to disrupt these unacceptable disparities and promote economic equity for Black businesses now? Come be part of the conversation and the solution!
