Ally Capellino, 9 Calvert Avenue store in London E2 7JP.
Come join us for a celebration of friendship and collaboration.
An installation, showcasing some of the recent work of Liaqat Rasul, the artist also known as SQUAT, will be at the East London store to introduce ‘Squat the Bag’ .
25 years ago Ally met Squat as his external assessor at Derby University.
They have been friends ever since. For his final collection, he enthusiastically put together an exuberant and overflowing range of women’s clothes, which was promptly snapped up by Liberty. Fast forwarding a decade he moved on to follow his passion for colour and texture through collage.
In techniques honed during lockdown his work is becoming confident and meaningful as he tackles all the touchy subjects of the day
through his work, sometimes all at once as here.
Dear to his heart are gender issues, Gaza, mental health and race.
“In India they’re really creative with things like toy making,” he says. “People use whatever materials they can find to make objects that have real energy and character. They don’t shy away from colour or texture or intensity, and that’s been a beautiful influence on me.” Quote taken from a recent article in TOAST
This year he suggested to Ally that she should make a mini bag that epitomised the key AC features.
Tick them off
- waxed cotton fabric
- a leather base
- pouchy pockets
- bridle leather buckle up straps
- and flaps with the corners cut off
The bag closes with a zip cut a little long so the tabs at either end can be held to pull against and allow the bag open to the maximum width.
New bags on the scene are due in stock any day. Here we have a sneak preview of the P Crew - Piper Crossbody, Parker Tote, Perry Backpack in Olive and Black. These are waxed cotton, leather free with contrast stitching and grosgrain straps. These close with a super efficient magnetic straps.
And finally ... the fantastic SEIKO has had a service and working a treat. After some delays in the repairs supply chain we are getting back on track here at Calvert Ave. Find out more in our latest blog.
