Happy Fathers' Day

Happy Fathers' Day

With Fathers’ Day just around the corner, we want to take this opportunity to wish a Happy Fathers’ Day to all of our members who are Dads. It is a testament to Canada’s values that so many kids follow in their parents’ footsteps and choose to serve their country. We are proud that so many sons, daughters and grandchildren keep the tradition of joining the Legion to continue to serve our communities. Long family histories with the Legion aren’t rare, but they are remarkable, and we think they should be celebrated and highlighted.

We want to hear from all of you Dads, whose kids have followed your lead and became members of the Legion. For all of you kids who are members, and have fathers who are members, we want to know what makes your Dad special to you and to the Legion.

Send us your stories and we’ll highlight some in future newsletters.

Kyle Scott

Husband / Father / Son of a Veteran / Grandson of a Veteran / A Veteran and proud Legion member

Comrade Kyle exemplifies service; genetics may play some role in this as he is the fourth generation of the Scott family who have served their country. Kyle is a modern combat Veteran having served 2 tours in Afghanistan 2004 & 2006, a proud Legion member, family man, volunteer extraordinaire. Kyle is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44 Whitecourt, where he has served as President and is currently the Branch Service Officer and was recently appointed District 8 Service Officer.

If this wasn’t enough, he was recently highlighted in the Legion Magazine as The Medal Man. Kyle has been instrumental in assisting Veterans and their families to reclaim medals that had not presented, been lost or destroyed. So far, he has submitted hundreds of requests on behalf of Veterans and their families from across the country. On top of all of this, he is also heavily involved with the Last Post Fund, researching Veterans’ gravesites and has submitted over 500 applications for proper grave markers across the nation.

Kyle has received many accolades for his continuing service to the Veteran community and The Royal Canadian Legion. He has received the Veterans Ombudsman Commendation and was chosen to represent AB-NWT Command for the Legion Pilgrimage.

None of this has been possible without the loving support of his wife Koren and sons Declan and Niall.

Thank You Kyle for your service - past, present and future!

Whitecourt Legion

The Whitecourt Legion was established April 1927, shortly after the formation of the Great War Veterans Association, which later became known as Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League and eventually The Royal Canadian Legion.

The Branch was at the heart of the community hosting many events.  In 1969, with the community’s help, the original GWVA Memorial Hall was moved and a new hall built.  Like the old structure the new hall as held many events from being a soup kitchen to black tie affairs.

During the Branch’s 80th Anniversary, Whitecourt Town Council renamed the street the Branch is on to Legion Street.
