Autumn is just around the corner, but there’s still time to enjoy the last warm days and evenings of late summer under the open sky.
This issue of Copenhagen Unfolded is written by Emilie, who is part of the VisitCopenhagen editorial team. This year, September is something special for Emilie – she’s getting a balcony! But Copenhagen is buzzing with life in what might be the last month of warm late-summer vibes, so even though it’s tempting to stay put and enjoy the new balcony, she’ll be heading out and about.
I hope my plans for the month will inspire you to explore everything Copenhagen has to offer this September. Here’s what we’ve got lined up:
- Total lunar eclipse: Enjoy the last mild evenings
- Get your pulse up in Copenhagen
- Last call for outdoor flea markets
- September specials

TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE: ENJOY THE LAST MILD EVENINGS
On Sunday, September 7 around 8 PM, the moon will be covered by the Earth’s shadow and take on a beautiful, rusty-red hue. A total lunar eclipse is a rare natural phenomenon, only visible from Europe about once every three years. It’s the perfect excuse to enjoy one of late summer’s (hopefully) mild evenings, and I’ll definitely be heading out to experience it.

Even though I’ll have a balcony by then, I’ll spend the evening at Reffen. Reffen is located right on the harborfront at Refshaleøen, offering an unobstructed view over the water, creating the perfect conditions for experiencing the wonders of the sky. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a clear night! While you wait for the lunar eclipse, you can enjoy food from all over the world at Reffen’s Street Food Market – you can get everything from tacos and bao buns to pizza and vegan bowls.
Reffen is far from the only place with delicious takeaway and street food where you can enjoy the last mild evenings of the year. Copenhagen is full of them! Check out our guide below.

GET YOUR PULSE UP IN COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen offers plenty of active experiences. For me, it’s a brilliant way to stay active while also creating lots of fun memories. I plan to take a boat trip in a GreenKayak with my family. You can borrow a free kayak from one of the rental spots and help keep the city’s harbors and lakes clean by picking up trash along the way. It’s a cozy way to experience Copenhagen from the water, get some exercise, and do a good deed – a real win-win, if you ask me!
Admittedly, I’m not a big adrenaline junkie, so my plans are pretty relaxed. But don’t worry, Copenhagen offers plenty of fun and active experiences both for those like me and for those who love speed and excitement!

LAST CALL FOR OUTSIDE FLEA MARKETS
I love going to flea markets. Luckily, there are plenty of them in Copenhagen, but unfortunately, it’s almost the last chance to visit the outdoor markets this season. I’m definitely going to enjoy them before they move indoors.

I’ve filled my calendar with a number of cozy flea markets, including Minas Lopper in Lunden on Nørrebro on Sunday, September 7, LoppeLinda at Enghave Plads on Saturday, September 13, and Gentofte Flea Market near Charlottenlund Station on Sunday, September 28. Flea markets are a great opportunity to find secondhand treasures for both your wardrobe and your home.
There are many other flea markets throughout the weekends in September. You can find all the flea markets in Copenhagen in the flea market calendar. We’ve also gathered our recommendations for the best flea markets in the city.
The city also has much more to offer in September. On September 14th, the streets will be buzzing for the Copenhagen Half Marathon, where both elite athletes and amateur runners take on the 21.0975 kilometers. If you're not running yourself, I highly recommend watching from the sidelines. There's plenty of great stuff happening along the route!
From September 3rd to 7th, you can experience Strøm Festival, an electronic music festival. The concerts take place at various locations around Copenhagen, including outside DR Koncerthuset, in Christiania, and even on the M3 and M4 metro lines. Yes, you read that right. Inside the metro, while it’s moving! Check out the program here.
From September 5th to 21st, the Golden Days Festival takes place, where a range of cultural institutions collaborate to create cultural experiences under one shared theme. This year’s theme is Love! You can see the program here.
I’m ready to soak up the last days and evenings of late summer. I hope you are too, and that my plans can inspire your September.
But remember, these are just my recommendations. At the editorial office, we're just as interested in hearing yours, so please let us know if there's anything you feel that we've missed.
We’ll be back in a month with much more on all the best of Copenhagen.
