Hi Everyone, did you think I had forgotten about you?
For the newcomers here, this is The Journal, where I bring you the good reads every month, straight to your inbox - so welcome and enjoy!
Puppy Preschool has been full steam ahead and to help me continue to deliver classes to you; I have brought in two incredible professionals who you are going to LOVE! I'm very excited to introduce Christine Balodis, a seasoned Guide Dog trainer with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, together with Alyssa Davidson, who works with complex behavioural challenges every day in her role with Domestic Animal Services (DAS).
I spent a few weeks in Bali, Indonesia and got acquainted with the peaceful and polite, purest dog breed in the world; the Kintamani, known as the Bali Dog.

Everywhere you look among the bustling busy streets of Bali are an abundance of seemingly stray street dogs...and cats! To my delight, I had plenty to photograph during this trip! Meet some of the beautiful Bali dogs I encountered on my recent visit to Indonesia.

Bali is home to two unique indigenous dogs; the Highland Kintamani and the Bali lowland dog. If you have travelled to Bali, you may have observed that Bali dogs come in all shapes and sizes! What you may not know is that they are revered for having an incredibly rich gene pool! What does this mean? It means that Bali's indigenous dog population is highly genetically diverse! This genetic diversity is important for the health, wellbeing and longevity of any biological being. What has come to light, is that Bali dogs constitute one of the greatest remaining reservoirs of genetic diversity.
Their environment has changed dramatically; many compounding factors including a rabies crisis have resulted in the once 800,000 strong pure Bali dog population, being reduced to an estimated 20,000 today. Organisations like Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) have spearheaded efforts to control the virus and continue to work with communities to establish control practices that work towards a rabies free region.

The rabies crisis in 2008 contributed to a widespread fear of dogs across Bali however, today local families care for their dogs as much as possible. Access to veterinary care is limited, but with the wonderful work of organisations like BAWA and Bali Street Dogs, regular mobile pop up clinics and prolific campaigns are contributing to significantly improved access across Bali. The holistic approach to vaccination, sterilisation and education is ongoing.

BAWA go out into communities across Bali and set an outstanding example; teaching care and compassion for other living beings through feeding programs has helped to repair the attitudes to their beautiful street dogs. I'm pleased to say that I witnessed only a clear sense of pride and responsibility in caring for their roaming animals.
