Hi Everyone!
2023 Puppy Preschool classes went out with a bang at both The Foreshore Vet and The Village Vet...check out some of my favourite pups from this year! In wrapping up 2023, I had one more person on my list for The Journal... I headed up to my old stomping ground to hang out with Dr Emily Lucas at Tamarama Beach, founder of The Whole Hound. Lastly, I braved the heat and set up at the RSPCA Christmas Markets and had the pleasure of meeting some new faces in our community...

Meet the accomplished veterinarian behind The Whole Hound...Dr Emily Lucas has done it all! After her internship with Randwick Equine Centre, Emily pursued small animal practice in Sydney, where behaviour quickly became a key interest within her role as a veterinarian. Armed with her membership in Veterinary Behaviour, Emily founded The Whole Hound, where she provides behaviour and training consultation services, both virtual and in person. Yes, that means she is available to us in Canberra!

I encountered Emily through her educational offering, not to mention her phenomenal resource based social media content @the.whole.hound. Dr Emily has got it going on! I'm a fan, not only because she and Biscuit are such a vibe, but because her approach to both clinical work and dog training is entirely through the lens of mental health and wellbeing for our dogs, something I care about most and is central to my behaviour and training classes.
I hung out at the beach for a morning with Emily and her mixed breed rescue Biscuit and yes, I picked her brain for you...
JBR: As dog owners, what is something that we could all implement today to make our dog's lives a little bit better?
The Whole Hound: One thing I would love dog owners to do more of is make dog walks about the dog. Don't make it about getting from A to B or to reach 10,000 steps, but allow your dog to really immerse themselves in the environment. This exploration is not only a very natural expression of behaviour, but the sniffing can improve emotional and cognitive health.

JBR: What would you say is the point at which one should engage with a behaviour vet and why?
The Whole Hound: As soon as the pet is showing signs of difficulty learning despite assistance from a qualified force free trainer.
Too often, a behaviour vet is used as a last resort, when really we can be utilised as support very early on. Medical conditions affecting body and brain function are often complicating matters and early intervention often improves outcomes.
My own dog, Biscuit, displayed very fearful behaviours towards other dogs at 9 weeks of age. While he did improve significantly with lots of management and learning, I do wish that I had provided anti-anxiety support from puppyhood.

It started out as a scorching hot set up at the RSPCA Christmas Markets and ended right on time with a wet and wild storm! Nonetheless, it was a lot of fun meeting some new faces and catching a few snaps of stall visitors along the way!
