Hi Everyone!
This month, I finally launched my Adolescent Classes, which began on Sunday - I have been looking forward to taking you further with your training and understanding of your dogs!
I have been going into your homes to work with you on some adolescent behavioural challenges - some bigger than others! I also spent a day with the RSPCA to give some more animals a well deserved glow up! Lastly, I took to socials this month to chat about the somewhat perplexing topic of Crate Training.

This month I'll be taking my first group of adolescents through my four week course where we explore solutions to common adolescent challenges; we examine perceived regression and body language; reinforcing obedience, place training and leadership; impulse control and building resilience and lastly, compliance training!
All of these skills are not only helpful to you as an owner, but ultimately help to minimise stress to your dogs in their day to day lives.

Baloo joined my August Puppy Preschool group at The Village Vet in Downer. When they told me he weighed in at 20kg at 12 weeks of age, my first question, was "what breed is he?"
Baloo is a Macedonian Sarplaninac sheepdog! This almighty breed is incredibly loyal and by all means, a gentle giant. Baloo was uncertain in our first class, having not met any other dogs.

Baloo the the Macedonian Sarplaninac shepdog, Fyshwick, ACT.

Three months on, Baloo is a whopping 35kg and embodies all the qualities of this magnificent breed; an excellent guard dog, he is proving very loyal to his owner Martin. However, with great size, comes great responsibility! Baloo is still a puppy, and his size makes his adolescent puppy behaviours much bigger and more challenging to manage! His chewing, playful mouthing and jumping up are considerable problems given his size! When we don't have physical leverage over our pups, it makes some of these adolescent challenges more important to address...and quickly!

So, I got to work and met Baloo at home to tackle his biting, jumping up and a few other bad habits! To combat his biting, I worked to change the association between hands and play to hands and calm. How? The game 'touch'. Teaching Baloo to 'touch' my hand gently with his nose completely changes the association and diverts the unwanted behaviour/bad habit into a rewarding game that protects your hands!
Jumping up is a tough problem to correct, especially with puppies, particularly when they are 35kg! I had to show Baloo that I owned my space, not him. This involved alot of standing still, patience and ignoring the jumping. I waited for pauses and for him to get tired of jumping on me before rewarding those moments and he soon got the message that I expected him to be calm and to respect my space.

I am thrilled to be partnering with the RSPCA ACT to help rehome animals as quickly as we can! A photo is the first thing people see when they enter a rescue organisation or shelter and I hope I can bring out the best in them to help place them into their new home!
Last year, the RSPCA ACT rehomed 1898 animals including 894 homeless cats and kittens. They have facilitated the rehoming and reclaim of 106 puppies! They offer emergency support and boarding to those in crisis with no where to go, including veterinary care whilst they are in residence.

Stay up to date on my socials @jbrpets_ for more from my latest visit to the RSPCA ACT. I'll also be heading to DAS again soon for another round of glow ups! All but a few dogs in my last feature have found new homes thanks to the Open Day last month at their premises in Symonston.
Could you be a match? Check out the dogs for adoption at Domestic Animal Services Canberra!
