A Tribute, an Anniversary, and a Vinyl Debut: Coming in 2025
|
|
On February 7, Efficient Space will release Hashish Hits in tribute to British producer and MC Ali Omar, who passed away in 2009 after battling cancer. Throughout his career, Omar drew deep inspiration from his father’s Arabic heritage, which profoundly shaped his music. In the early 1990s, Omar relocated to Australia, where he in 1993 co-founded Atone with Andy Fitzgerald. As a pioneer of technology in music production, Omar used tools like the Akai sampler. Between 1998 and 2004, he self-released four albums under his Hashish Studios imprint, selling copies directly to local record stores and at live shows. Hashish Hits offers an intimate glimpse into Omar’s creative world. Highlights include Fitzgerald’s atmospheric contributions on the opening track, Gina Mitchell’s serpentine vocals and Louis Mitchell’s masterful mixing on “On Release,” and Kye of Wicked Beat Sound System lending his talent to “Poor Man Beggar Man Thief.”
