RFK Jr's confirmation

Hey Bala fam,

I've been thinking about this tweet A LOT

This tweet underscores why I write Bala Bites.

And why, you dear reader, are so engaged with it.

You and a thousand others read this newsletter because we want to be ready and educated for the time when all the chips are on the table.

(like in a hospital setting)

Or better yet, take action to prevent ending up in the hospital.

It's about preparation and prevention.

But there's another angle to the tweet that's bigger than those above.

It has to do with developing agency over your health.

Knowing you have the ability to exert control over a health circumstance and influence the outcome is a superpower these days.

Without that kind of agency, you will feel powerless in our current health system. Pushed around. Taken advantage of.

It wasn't always that way.

The shift happened slowly over decades but more people are getting hip to it.

Old way: Defer to the experts. Low-agency thinking is rewarded.

New way: Be a citizen expert. High-agency mentality garners respect.

In this new world, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to get smart.

To learn about your body, what makes it work best and why.

Huberman dropped the hint in the tweet above.

It's best we all start paying attention.

Now onto this week's bites.

Pecorino, The Longevity Cheese

I wouldn't be able to hit my protein goals without cheese. It's a necessary part of my daily routine (which is crazy because I used to be lactose intolerant). When I discovered pecorino romano, a raw, Italian sheep cheese, I felt like it was too good to be true. Not only is the cheese tasty and nutrient dense, it is one of the best natural sources of C15:0 (Pentadecanoic Acid)—a rare, health-boosting fat that’s been linked to longevity and disease prevention. So I started maxxing pecorino and have never looked back. Not in your routine? Give it a try. It's easy to find at Whole Foods or any local grocer. Costco even sells a whole wheel. My fav meal that prominently features pecorino is Cacio e Pepe (my homemade version never stacks up). There are a ton of other ways to incorporate this raw, unpasteurized cheese into meals and snacks. We go deeper into pecorino and how to add more of it to your routine in the link below.

How To Pick Protein Powders

Last week's report on how a non-profit found high levels of heavy metals in popular protein powders threw everyone for a loop. It made choosing a protein powder an even more daunting event. Factor in there are new protein powder brands popping up everyday and it's enough to make your head spin. To ease your pain and help you make the best decision for you and your family, we put together this buyer's guide to help you navigate the growing landscape of protein powders. A little bit of extra knowledge around what to look for can go a long way. And no, don't ever expect us to endorse this protein diet coke drink.

The Consequence of RFK Jr

There is nothing more dividing than RFK Jr's name right now. To some, he represents the only viable solution to the failures of our food system and healthcare industry. To others, he's a clear and present danger to the scientific and risk-based framework that governs our health system. Whichever side you are on, it is clear we need a new north star for our health and food systems. We are spending too much with terrible results and we lack the transparency to figure out why. No matter which side you take on RFK Jr, he will be a secretary of major consequence.
