THE CROWN ACT
The CROWN Act was created in 2019 to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools.
Sen. Cory Booker led an effort to pass the Crown Act into federal law in December of 2022, but GOP senators blocked the bill from being passed in the Senate.
The history of braids dates back to 3500 BC. The practice of braids holds deep ties and significance in the African culture as one of the oldest hairstyles for Black hair.
