Spring Cleaning 101: Tackle Your Closets

Our favorite way to kick off spring cleaning? Tackle those closets! Clothing that's been stuck in drawers or hanging in closets since fall is just waiting to get a little attention from you.

  1. Start by purging old clothes/linens with the Marie Kondo method: Does it bring you joy? If not, add it to a pile to donate or resell on ThreadUp.
  2. Wash anything you're keeping that's been sitting in a drawer or stuck in a linen closet for too long. It'll shake off the (literal) dust bunnies and leave your wardrobe feeling fresh.
  3. Choose a detergent that will clean those clothes effectively, but won't saturate them with toxic chemicals. We recommend Molly's Suds, and you can learn more about the brand below!

Meet Molly's Suds Founder Monica Leonard

Molly's Suds was built in the aftermath of a terrible tragedy: The founder's third daughter, Molly, was stillborn. As the mother of three other healthy children and a pediatric nurse, Monica Leonard knew something wasn't right. She dove into research about pregnancy and discovered a a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that proved that mothers pass chemicals to their babies via pregnancy and breast milk. She knew then and there that she had a responsibility to teach others about the risk of the toxins in our everyday products, and to help make a difference. Learn more about Molly's Suds and their story.

Ask Ashleigh

Q: What's the first product you should swap when switching to naturals?

A: This is the #1 question that I get asked and I always say laundry detergent! Conventional detergents expose us to some of the most damaging toxins in our homes through both inhalation and skin contact—there's a high exposure rate to whatever's in your detergent because you're wearing your clothes, sleeping on your bed sheets, and using your towels, all day, every day. Plus, washers and dryers create indoor air pollution by emitting fumes throughout your home. And what's in those fumes? Potential carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, and birth defect causing chemicals like 1,4 dioxane and synthetic fragrance. So, if you're looking to make the most impact with your natural and nontoxic swaps, start with your laundry detergent!
