Featured Program: Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for Latinx and Hispanic Communities
Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for the Latinx and Hispanic Communities (available in English and Spanish) is a community education presentation that addresses mental health, suicide, and its impact in the Latinx and Hispanic communities in the United States. This module of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Talk Saves Lives program focuses on:
- Protective factors, risk factors and warning signs specific to Latinx and Hispanic communities
- Racial and systemic factors that contribute to barriers in seeking help and suicide risk in Latinx and Hispanic communities
- How participants can take care of their communities and speak with family and friends about suicide and mental health
- Steps to take to seek culture-specific mental health resources in Spanish and English
Participants will receive helpful education in mental health and suicide prevention through activity-based learning, and take-home materials to use if needed in the future. The goal of this new program is to create conversations in Latinx and Hispanic communities around mental health and encourage help-seeking to prevent suicide and suicide attempts.
Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention for the Latinx and Hispanic Communities was created in collaboration with the National Latino Behavioral Health Association (NLBHA) and experts at AFSP. This partnership is the first of its kind at AFSP and in its effort to provide education on culture-specific factors of suicide and expand suicide prevention programming to diverse communities.

Volunteer Spotlight: Emily Duca
|
|
Emily (pictured with her son, Andrew) is a long-time volunteer with AFSP Long Island and captain of Team Tornado. She can often be found volunteering at many of AFSP LI's events, is a member of the Out of the Darkness Walks Committee and spearhead's her team's fundraising efforts in the community.
We asked Emily to share with us a little bit about why she became involved as a volunteer and what volunteering means to her: "I became involved in AFSP shortly after my daughter, Cherilyn, died by suicide. Before her death, Cherilyn had expressed an interest in participating in the overnight walk. She had introduced us to AFSP. It seemed fitting to participate in the (community) walks after we lost her. And so, Team Tornado was born.
Now, almost 20 years later, AFSP remains at the core of my being. Volunteering for this organization almost goes without saying. Each year, the walk is a nucleus for the gathering of friends and family brought together by this tragedy. It also represents the message of "HOPE”…hope for all of us!"
Thank you for everything you do for AFSP Long Island, Emily! We are so grateful to have you as part of our team!

Fundraising Event Spotlight: Bait & Brews
|
|
Out of the Darkness walk team, Gibbi's Kids, will be hosting their 3rd Annual Bait & Brews Fundraiser on Sunday, September 8th. We asked Gibbi's Kids team member and event organizer, Jess Poulin, to share some information about the event with us:
"The Bait & Brews fishing trip fundraiser was started in 2022 in support of our Out of the Darkness community walk team, Gibbi’s Kids. We walk in memory of Donnie Gibbons, who we lost to suicide in 2014. Gibbi’s kids has participated in the Jones Beach walk for many years and attended various AFSP fundraising efforts across Long Island.
Donnie was born in 1981. He lived in Massapequa but grew up as a proud Farmingdale ‘Daler. He was a son, brother, uncle, cousin and best friend to many. He loved his family, the NY Yankees and the NY J-E-T-S with his whole heart. He was very funny and is remembered for his great story telling. He loved charter fishing, especially if there was a cooler full of brews and a friend by his side. His family and friends came together to create this annual family friendly fishing trip as a perfect way to gather, remember our friend, and to support this important cause."
Special thanks to Jess for sharing the information about this awesome event! If you love to fish and want to enjoy a fun afternoon on the water supporting a good cause, purchase your tickets to Bait & Brews today by clicking the button below!
