Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ Community
AFSP’s Talk Saves Lives has long been one of the country’s leading suicide prevention education programs, covering the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight this leading cause of death. The updated module of this essential program, Talk Saves Lives™: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ Community gives participants essential and lifesaving understanding of topics including:
- Suicide risk and its unique considerations in LGBTQ communities
- Recognizing suicide risk factors and warning signs for LGBTQ people
- Protective factors that can help lower the suicide rate
- The latest research related to LGBTQ suicide prevention
- How to seek and offer support for yourself or others
- Crisis resources and services for the LGBTQ community
- What communities can do to support LGBTQ people
We all have a role to play in preventing suicide, and those in the LGBTQ community may face additional challenges and barriers to help because of discriminatory factors. This program informs more people of the best ways to provide caring and support to those who need it.

Volunteer Spotlight: Kristen Rosario
|
|
Kristen just recently became involved with AFSP Long Island after learning about us from a friend and she jumped right into volunteering! After completing AFSP 101, she volunteered at the SCCC Campus Walk in April and has volunteered at several other tabling events, inlcuding a full day at Central Islip High School, spreading the word about AFSP to over 2,600 high school students! Kristen is getting ready to become a trained presenter for our Talk Saves Lives program to help bring them to the local community and continuously seeks out new ways to get involved with the chapter! We're so excited to have her as part of our AFSP LI team!

Team Spotlight: Team Brittany Marie
|
|
On October 2nd, 2009 at the young age of 14, Brittany Marie Petrocca lost her battle with depression. While coping with the grief of losing her daughter, Brittany's mom Carrie started to get involved with AFSP Long Island. Team Brittany Marie was started in loving memory of her daughter and she started raising money for AFSP Long Island and spreading awareness for suicide prevention.
Team Brittany Marie's signature fundraising event, the Blue Angel Car Show, started in 2020. When Brittany was young, she would sit on her porch admiring her neighbors light blue Thunderbird and tell her mom that one day she would own that car. Unfortunately, Brittany never made it to the age where she could learn to drive, save her money, and buy the car. After she passed, Carrie's husband, who had never met Brittany, started a 10 year search to find a light blue Thunderbird in honor of Brittany. It wasn't easy, but they eventually found the perfect car that matched Brittany's eyes and decided to show it off while at the same time raising money for AFSP, and the Blue Angel Car Show was born.
To date, Team Brittany Marie has raised over $300,000 for AFSP Long Island and continues to raise money with their car show every year. After volunteering with the chapter for 14 years, last year Carrie took on the role of Special Events Manager with our chapter and we couldn't be happier to have her on our staff! The 5th Annual Blue Angel Car Show will be taking place this month on June 9th at Sunrise Mall (click the button below for more information). Way to go Team Brittany Marie!!
